The beauty of slow cooking is that it makes cooking so easy and convenient. As long as you have the right ingredients, you can make a meal for the whole family without the usual hassles that come with making a dish from scratch.

Now, for most of us, slow cooked dishes are typically comprised of stews, soups, and meats but you can whip up kid-friendly meals using your crock-pot too. Kids can be picky eaters and it’s hard to figure out what nutritious ingredients to sneak into their meals. That’s why we’re sharing these quick and child-approved recipes you can try using your own crock-pot:

Spaghetti with Giant Meatballs

A classic recipe that’s always a hit among kids! Use ground poultry meats instead of red meat for an even healthier dish the whole family will love.

You will need:

1 large egg
1 pound 97- 98% lean ground turkey
1 pound 92-93% lean ground turkey
2/3 cup (40g) breadcrumbs
3 tablespoons olive oil
¼ cup grated parmesan cheese
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 teaspoons dried oregano
2 teaspoons dried basil
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
1 large onion sweet onion, sliced
2 28-ounce cans crushed tomatoes
chopped fresh basil for serving, optional

In a mixing bowl, beat the egg, add the ground turkey, bread crumbs, olive oil, parmesan cheese, garlic, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper and mix well. Roll a dollop of the meat mixture into a ball. Place all the rolled meatballs on a large baking sheet.

Coat a large skillet with olive oil over medium-high heat and brown the meatballs, one minute on each side. In your crockpot, add the onion slices, and crushed tomatoes. Add the browned meatballs to the crockpot, cover, and cook on low for 6 to 6 1/2 hours. Serve with cooked pasta and sprinkle with chopped basil.

Pizza Sloppy Joes

A step up from the traditional sloppy Joes, this recipe is filled with nutrient-rich ingredients, including fresh veggies and lean chicken!

You will need:

For the Ground Beef Mixture

1 pound lean ground beef
1 pound ground pork sausage
1 small onion, chopped
½ medium-size green bell pepper, chopped

For the Sauce

2 cups Spaghetti or Pizza sauce
½ cup water
2 tablespoons cider vinegar
3 tablespoons yellow mustard
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 cloves garlic, minced
1- ½ teaspoons Italian seasoning
½ teaspoon crushed red pepper (optional)

Toppings

16 slices pepperoni
8 slices mozzarella cheese
8 hamburger buns, toasted

In a large pan, brown the beef and sausage with bell peppers and onions over medium-high heat for ten minutes. Drain well and pour the mixture in the slow cooker. Pour the rest of the ingredients except the toppings and cook on low for 4 to 5 hours. After cooking, add several spoonfuls of the beef mixture on the toasted hamburger buns then top with mozzarella cheese and pepperoni!

Cheesy French Fries Casserole

Why make traditional French fries for the kids when you can make this savory dish with minimal effort?

You will need:

1 pound ground beef, browned
½ bag frozen French fries
1 onion, chopped
16 cans, red kidney beans, drained
¼ pound Velveeta cubed
10 3/4 oz. can Tomato Soup
Salt and pepper to taste

Start by browning the beef in a skillet before draining and pouring into the slow cooker. Add the French fries, onions, kidney beans, and Velveeta in layers. Pour the tomato soup on top and finish up with a sprinkle of salt and pepper. Cover and cook on low for 6 to 8 hours. Top with generous handfuls of shredded cheese of your choice on the last 10 minutes of slow cooking.

Pizza Soup

It’s a soup and a complete meal in one! Best of all, prepping only takes minutes.

You will need:

1 pound ground Italian sausage
32 oz. beef broth
1 can tomato sauce
1 can diced tomatoes
½ small onion, diced
1 can sliced black olives, drained
1 tablespoon dried basil
2 tablespoon dried oregano
1 ½ teaspoon kosher salt
¼ cup diced pepperoni slices
1 can sliced mushrooms, drained
1 ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese

In a large skillet, brown the ground Italian sausage over medium-high heat, then drain and set aside. In the crockpot, mix all ingredients except the Mozzarella cheese. Cover and cook on low for 6 hours. Top the cheese in the final 10 minutes of slow cooking and serve hot!

Creamy Chicken Pot Pie

This tasty treat is sure to bring a smile on the kids’ faces!

You will need:

8 ounces cremini mushrooms, stemmed and trimmed
4 carrots, diced
1 medium onion, chopped
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
2 sprigs fresh thyme
1 bay leaf
1 ½ pounds boneless, skinless chicken thighs
kosher salt and black pepper
1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
1 cup frozen peas
1 cup frozen green beans
1/3 cup heavy cream

In the slow cooker, mix the mushrooms, carrots, onion, flour, thyme, and bay leaf with ½ cup water. Add the chicken thighs on top, season with salt and pepper then cover and cook for 4 to 5 hours on high or 7 to 8 hours on low. 20 minutes before serving, preheat the oven to 425° F, cut the puff pastry into 4 circles and place them on a baking tray. Stick in the oven and bake for 8 to 10 minutes.

On the final ten minutes of cooking time, add the peas, green beans, cream, and ½ teaspoon salt into the slow cooker, stir well and continue cooking on high for 5 to 10 minutes. Add a ladleful of the chicken mixture in a serving bowl and cover the top with bake puff pastry.  Serve piping hot and enjoy!

Savory Chicken Alphabet Pasta Soup

Can you spell F-U-N? Perfect for cold days spent at home, this heartwarming dish is made from fresh veggies and tender chicken that even fussy eaters will love!

You will need:

6 boneless, skinless chicken thighs
4 carrots, cut into 1-inch pieces
4 stalks celery, cut into ½ -inch pieces
1 medium onion, halved
2 garlic cloves, smashed
2 bay leaves
kosher salt and black pepper
½ cup Alphabet pasta
¼ cup chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley
crackers, for serving

In a crockpot, add the chicken, carrots, celery, onion, garlic, bay leaves, 6 cups water, 1 teaspoon salt, and ¼ teaspoon pepper then cover and cook for 4 to 5 hours on high or 7 to 8 hours on low. On the last 20 minutes of cooking time, transfer the chicken into a bowl, shred it with a fork and set aside.

Discard the onion and bay leaves and add the pasta into the crock-pot then cook for 15 to 20 minutes. Once the pasta cooks, stir the shredded chicken back into the slow cooker and sprinkle with parsley. Serve with a side of crackers!
